CRIMINAL ACTION AGAINST KARAOKE BOX
An entertainment outlet located at a shopping mall in Kuala Lumput operating k-boxes was raided by the Enforcement Division, Kuala Lumpur office on 3 May this year. K-box facilities are popular in Malaysia especially in the rural areas where members of the public can buy a token – for 50 cents to RM1.00 which enables them to select any song to sing. This particular outlet which was raided offered 22 boxes and has been operating for more than a year without a MACP licence. Efforts to get the owner to comply with the necessary MACP licence were not successful. MACP then lodged a complaint with the Enforcement Division under Section 41(3) Copyright Act, MDTCA and acting on the complaint, the raid was conducted.
In a press conference held after the raid, Tn Shahar, Enforcement Head, Kuala Lunpur MDTCA said that all the TV monitors, speakers and CPUs valued over RM100,000 in the 22 rooms were seized. 15 Enforcement officers, 3 policemen and MACP representatives were involved in the said raid.
More raids are targetted for this year and we will update members accordingly.
