MACP's 14th Annual General Meeting
MACP's 14th Annual General Meeting which was successfuly held on 24 June 2004 at the Crown Princess Hotel, Kuala Lumpur saw the appointment of En. Adnan Abu Hassan and the re-election of Pn. Habsah Hassan into MACP's Board of Directors.
En. Adnan joins the other writer directors namely Pn. Habsah Hassan (Chairperson), En. Ahmad Izham Omar (Vice-Chairperson), En. Rosli Khamis (Loloq) and En. Johari Teh in MACP's Board. Meanwhile, the publisher directors in the Board are Ms. Carol Chan, Vice Chairperson (EMI Music Publishing Malaysia Sdn Bhd), Ms. Esther Leong (BMG Music Publishing ( Malaysia ) Sdn Bhd), Pn. Jennifah Johari (Luncai Emas Sdn Bhd), Mr. Jack Teo (Universal Music Publishing Sdn Bhd) and Ms. Jackie Poh (Warner Chappell Music (M) Sdn Bhd).
The AGM which was attended by about 100 members had also approved all resolutions proposed in the Notice of Meeting distributed to all members including the re-appointment of Messrs Ernst & Young as MACP's auditors. Besides that, many members also raised issues, opinions and suggestions during the AGM which the Board will definitely consider carefully.
Note : Ms Carol Chan has stepped down from MACP's Board due to her new appointment as Director Regional Royalty and Copyright in Warner/Chappell Music Ltd. Ms Esther Leong has been appointed as the new Vice-Chairperson (Publishers) to replace Carol, with immediate effect.
Briefing For MACP Members
For the convenience of interested members, a second briefing (for year 2004) for members was held on the same day and venue as MACP's 14th Annual General Meeting (AGM) last 24 June 2004 at the Crown Princess Hotel. This briefing which was attended by some new and senior members was organised to help explain on music copyright, MACP's role as a collective administrator of music copyright and also members' own duties as regards to their membership. Various issues were raised and some of them were also discussed during the AGM held subsequently.
Workshop On “Usage of Malay Language in Lyrics”
Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) with MACP's co-operation organised a two day workshop named “Usage of Malay Language in Lyrics” held from 13 to 14 July 2004 at DBP's Seminar Hall, Kuala Lumpur.
The workshop's main objective was to raise the level of the national language used in lyrics and to raise writers' (who are directly involved with preparation of lyrics) ability to use the national language.
This workshop was attended by seventeen participants and the 5 speakers invited to give their talks were Prof. Emeritus Datuk Dr. Nik Safiah Karim and Prof. Rahman Shaari for the first day while Pn. Habsah Hassan, En. Johan Nawawi and En. Amran Omar took their turns for the second day.
Generally the participants were satisfied with the workshop and hoped that there would be similar worskhops organised in the future catering for a bigger capacity of participants.
Briefing For Historic Melaka City Council's Enforcement Officers
Continuing with its public awareness campaign and to disseminate information on music copyright and MACP's operations to various sectors of society including the government agencies, a briefing was held at the Historic Melaka City Council (MBMB) on 6 August 2004 at MBMB's Meeting Hall (Anjung Makmur). This briefing was attended by about 50 MBMB's enforcement officers of various ranks.
Destruction of Pirated CD/VCD Ceremony
As a symbol of the Government's seriusness in eradicating piracy a Destruction of Pirated CDs/VCDs Ceremony was organised by the Ministry of Domestic Trade & Consumer Affairs (DTCA) on 16 September 2004 at DTCA's Kompleks Penyimpanan Penguatkuasa in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. Other than representatives from recording companies, MACP and the Ministry's officers, this event was also attended by representatives from the Film and Video Protection Sdn. Bhd. (Motion Picture Association), RIM Cop Sdn. Bhd., Public Performance Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (PPM), Business Software Alliances, entertainment associations and also a few artistes such as Rahim Maarof, group ALAM and Norman KRU.
Prosecution Workshop 2004
Since MACP implemented its enforcement plan in 2002, legal criminal actions had been taken against five(5) errant entertainment operators throughout Malaysia . To facilitate the prosecution process of those cases in the near future, MACP had taken a step further to assist the Ministry of Domestic Trade & Consumer Affairs (DTCA) in carrying out its duties by organizing a prosecution workshop which aimed at equipping DTCA's officers with the required knowledge to conduct prosecutions under Section 41 (3) of the Copyright Act 1987.
The workshop titled “Towards Section 41 (3) of the Copyright Act 1987” was held from the 20 th to 21 st September 2004 at the Primula Beach Resort, Kuala Terengganu. The workshop was supported by DTCA and participated by over 20 officers from various branches of DTCA's Enforcement Division and also representatives from the Attorney General's Chambers.
The workshop was officiated by Tuan Zainal Abidin bin Mohd Nordin, the Assistant Director General DTCA's Enforcement (Operations). MACP was honored to have the attendance of reputable speakers such Mr Ang Kwee Tiang, CISAC's Regional Director for Asia Pacific, Mr Wong Sai Fong of Messrs Shearn Delamore & Co. and Prof Dr Khaw Lake Tee, Dean Faculty of Law, University of Malaya to deliver several topics such as Basic Principles of Copyright, Collective Management Rights, Roles of CISAC etc.
Each participant was presented with a certificate at the end of the workshop, as an appreciation for their participation. The workshop ended with a closing speech by Tuan Rosik Bin Yakub, DTCA's Director of Intellectual Property Protection Unit.
SPORT AND ACTIVITIES
Sports Activities With DTCA
MACP organized friendly football and netball matches against the Enforcement Division, Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (DTCA) on 29 June 2004 . These games were successfully held at the Kampung Pandan Sports Centre, Kuala Lumpur . The games ended with MACP's football team loosing 2-3 while MACP's netball team won 12-10.
Meanwhile, as a follow-up to the football and netball games held earlier, MACP organized a Friendly Bowling tournament with DTCA's bowling team on 30 June 2004 and held at the Bangsar Bowl, Bangsar Shopping Centre, Bangsar.
Some of the members whom represented MACP were Y. Bhg Dato' Johari Salleh, VE, Andy Flop Poppy, Ani Mayuni, Shikin, Hairee KOOL, Abie Abdullah and many others.
Many thanks to all members who came and represented MACP for all the abovementioned sports activities.
Friendly Netball Match Against Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL)
Kuala Lumpur University had extended MACP an invitation to participate in a friendly netball game which was held on 11 August 2004 at the Padang Kelab Sultan Sulaiman, Kg. Baru, Kuala Lumpur .
MACP's team gave a surprise with an easy win of 12-2.
Friendly Football Match Against Singapore's EZ's Group
MACP received an invitation from EZ's Group, an association from Singapore , for a friendly football match. The match was part of EZ's Group activities during their annual tour to Kuala Lumpur recently.
The event was held at Stadium Raja Muda, Kg. Baru on 13 August 2004 and saw MACP team winning with a score of 2-1.
